The person that has made an impact on my life is a teacher by the name of Demian Yattaw. He was my public speaking teacher in the eleventh grade. Demian has impacted my life when I needed it the most, I came to him when I decided to take on the challenge of poetry. My passion for poetry was small until one day in class.
The day that changed my life started of simple, we were going around the room and saying what we felt passionate about. when it came my turn to speak i said the first thing on my mind poetry. At the time I wasn't really that into poetry, all i knew was most of it was supposed to rhyme. As i said the word “poetry” I saw a spark go through Demian’s body. He looked me over as if he was reading into my soul. he then said, “you look like a poetry guy. see me after class and we can talk I have some good poetry books for you if you want.” I was okay with getting a book on poetry, I was willing to give it a shot and hopefully like it. the only poets I knew were J.D. Salinder. When the class was over Demian stood up and started to shuffle around for a book. the book looked pretty new and it was large for a book on poetry. I immediately took the book and thumbed through it in a flash. When the day was over I brought the book home with me it was called "9 stories of J.D. Salinger". I started to read it and I was completely hooked on the messages in each poem. The shock and simplicity of each poem put me in a mind bending reality where i thought anything was possible. Basically the book is a collection of stories that are the best of his work and I personally love all the stories just as "A Perfect day for a Bananafish" and "The Laughing man."
I tried to interpret all of the meaning in each poem that I read but with no hope I figured out that I didn't need to understand the poem to feel it’s image. I began to think that poetry was a way to communicate with people when you don’t know the words to say. I thought about my life as it was and I knew I needed to get some things off my chest. I began to write small poems about love, I thought that was the basic for poetry. I knew I wouldn't be on the level of complexity like Salinger but i tried to impress my teacher as much as I could. When I presented my poem to him I could see that he liked what I had written,he asked me after class if he could read it to the class the next day. I was still unsure about what i had written and that i was
